As someone who has been recruiting for the automotive industry since 2018, here are my Top 5 Tips to help you.
1. Indeed is the best platform for advertising your job
Indeed is tricky to navigate, and it can be expensive. Depending on your location and job, it could cost around £30 a day, which adds up quickly. Indeed WILL call you after a week or so to say that you need to spend more money on the advert, but this is not necessarily true. Just ask them for facts on why you need to do this.
*You can technically advertise for free on Indeed, which can sometimes work.
2. Do not use AI to write your job advert
I know it is appealing, and you want to look good, but it is like the ChatGPT posters – people can spot it a mile off, and it puts people off. You don’t want to spend £30 a day for people to read the advert and not like it.
Whenever we ask people why they apply for a job that we are recruiting for, they say it is because of the advert. We always say it is best to be yourself, leading us onto…
3. Be yourself
Not everyone wants a shiny garage with fancy social media. Some employees love that, so if you like it, then do it, and you will attract similar people to you. However, if your garage is not like that, and instead is a classic workshop with people who love cars and playing RATM on the radio, then say that too. Be yourself, and you will attract the right people.
4. Move fast
The good people do not stay on the market for long, which is hard because you are probably recruiting because you are short-staffed. But you need to spare 30 minutes up to two hours every day to be able to recruit.
5. Recruiting for a service advisor is a sprint; recruiting for the workshop is a marathon
What do we mean by that? You need to go fast and give it as much time as you can when recruiting Service Advisors. Don’t be patient, be fast! However, technicians take longer to find, so be patient and don’t panic if it has been two weeks.
A bonus tip (I could write 30 of these!)
Do the best that you can in the face-to-face interview.
Ideally, you want to do a telephone interview and then a face-to-face interview. When they come to your garage, you also need to sell your place of work.
Again, as I said previously, don’t oversell; be genuine, but also be prepared. Give it some genuine thought. Think about how you can prepare the person for what to expect, but also say the good things. Ask them why they are leaving their current employer and see if you can provide something better.
If you want help with recruitment, we can help in three ways:
1. Sign up to our Vital Portal
There is a feature dedicated to recruitment, and it will store all of your telephone notes and responses to the questions you ask.
2. Let us recruit for you!
We offer a five-month package and will recruit for you! We will do everything; all you need to do is meet the person and decide if you want to give them the job. How do the five months work? Well, if you get two months in, and you decide it isn’t working, then we will terminate that employee’s contract for you (as long as that is fair) and then recruit again.
3. Training
We will soon be providing training on how to do face-to-face interviews. These will be free for our subscribers 😊 All you need to do is become a subscriber.
So if you are venturing solo with recruitment, then be yourself. But remember: it takes work!
If you want help with recruiting, then complete our quick contact form, and we will be in contact.
